I think it’s universally true that “the fair is fun.” Heck, even I can remember going to the Del Mar Fair in San Diego. The Santa Cruz County Fair is no exception, and I’m glad that the girls got to experience it this year. The great weather, wonderful sights (games, rides, food) and exposure to 4H animals was outstanding.
We got to the fair on Saturday at 10:00AM - right when they opened - and it was a wonderful opportunity to truly see the fair for what it is without having to deal with all the people the can overwhelm some of the more popular things to see. Our day started with Babi and the girls on the tea-cups, which was fun for us, even though I think Babi got a little dizzy once the girls figured out how to make the cup spin faster. From there we visited the old-farm area, which included places to see how our forefathers lived. Of course, all along the way we passed your typical (yummy smelling) fair food, that was almost too difficult to resist. Ummm… wait, I don’t think we resisted everything.
That’s right, the girls got slushees, french fries, corn dogs, and a myriad of tasty treats. Exactly what you would expect from the fair - and as tasty, I’m sure. Although, I will say, if you’re opting for that pile of fries I think you’re going to find that it’s too greasy and not as good as your more traditional garlic fries. But hey - we still ate them, so I guess it wasn’t that bad.
My favorite part these days is always the 4H area (the part before they’re sold off) and seeing things like the baby pigs, cows, and chickens. It’s amazing how beautiful these animals are and being in their presence makes me wonder how much different life would have been 100 years ago when everyone was forced to raise their own animals and produce. But, that was another time, another place, and one that will never come back. We’ll just have to continue looking forward to what life has to offer for us.

P.S. Some of the pictures in this gallery entry apply to the beach we visited afterwards, but check it out as there are quite a few more shots there from the fair that aren’t part of this posting.
