I’m way behind in writing about some of our recent adventures, but thought that I would take a moment to catch everyone up on our recent New Brighton State Beach camping trip. For those that haven’t heard of it or visited, it’s south of Santa Cruz and is touted as a beach-side campground, which is probably about as accurate as one can get. You don’t get to sleep on the beach, but it’s a short walk from the campground and adds quite a bit of fun to what otherwise might just be a trip into the forest. Hopefully the pictures and following story will share a little of the experience from our perspective.
As you can probably tell from the pictures, we made this trip with a the normal group of like-aged children and their slaves parents. Troy and Michele and Mike and Lisa, plus Cole, Sybney and Audry rounded our our family for a weekend (Friday through Sunday) of fun, camping, and even some time at the beach.
No matter what the age, camping is exciting and at our house we started talking about the trip and counting down the seconds around Monday. “Nope, not camping today, that’s the day after tomorrow” and so on. When the day finally came I’m really surprised that Sofi and Natalie’s little heads didn’t pop off for all the excitement of packing up their stuff and getting ready to go camping. Just the experience of sleeping in the tent trailer seemed beyond their capacity for thrills and excitement. Fortunately, of course, they survived and after a little bit of time playing around the campground, exploring everyone’s trailers, and figuring out where they could go… he desire for s’mores started… always looking for the next great thing.
The beach was a little chilly, but still fun for everyone and children being children they were in the ice-cold water, playing in the sand, and really getting out to enjoy all the campground had to offer. Troy had a friend come over to help out in surf fishng, but the two that they did manage to catch (or the one they caught twice) was actually slightly smaller than the bait, so it was tossed back and we ate meat for dinner. Too bad as fresh ocean fish would have been loads of fun.
Jut so everyone knows, we didn’t ditch modern America too far behind – the camp had power, internet access, and we even brought a projector for night-time entertainment. That wasn’t a replacement for the s’mores, but definitely added some extra fun for some beach weary children.
All and all an outstanding trip – and one that we will likely repeat again with the same group. I would recommend the campground without hesitation, but make sure you book early as it tends to fill up quickly. (Note that there are a ton of additional photos in the gallery, too!)
